Aside from the place we are going to for lunch on Saturday(it sounds awesome), what are some of the good local restaurants?  Some place that showcases local cuisine where the locals eat? (Yes I used the work local three times in a row, but we want to go somewhere that we are going to find in Pennsylvania!).  Thanks in advance.

Do you mean local cuisine as in home-cooked southern food or a variety of places and cultures? We have some really good Indian restaurants here, I could give you a list. We have some other really good local, non-chain places like Sole which is Spanish cuisine. Since I manage a monthly dinner out group I can certainly come up with something... Let me know your preferences and I'll get on it. -Audrey

Audrey,

Definitely the Southern cooked meal variety is what we are looking for.  Something that I won't be able to find where we live.  Thanks in advance.

I'm sure we can come up with some ideas for you. I can't think of any places right off the top of my head.

I don't live in Charlotte but I get a chance to eat out there occasionally.  The best southern-cooked meal I've had is at Lupie's Cafe.  http://www.lupiescafe.com/

Last time I was there (last Nov), they had great fried squash & cooked greens.  Plus they served everything with a big hunk of cornbread.  It's a "meat + 2 sides" kinda place.  I usually just go for the sides.   Smiley

The much-talked-about place for Southern food is Mert's Heart & Soul in uptown Charlotte.

I've never been there before but I've heard from lots of people who have.  Never heard anything bad about the food.  But I've heard it's hard to get a table during the week & a couple of folks think it's overpriced (priced for uptown).

Here's their website:

You can take the light rail into uptown & Mert's is easily within walking distance.

ok, if I come to the ball, I'm thinking I will likely have to shop at a local grocer and keep a cooler of food in my room.  The restaurant in the hotel being Italian will probably not have much, if any, gluten free selections for me.

Is there a grocery store near-by that I can get a cooler full of food at?  Like walking distance maybe?

Reba,
I'm going to start a new topic on gluten-free info for Charlotte. With you, there will be at least 3 of us at the ball - and probably a few more will speak up here.

Also, I'll be glad to either take you to a store for shopping (if you don't have a car) or go with you so you don't get lost.

Another one on the light rail line is Price's Chicken Coop, which I believe first opened in 1947.  This is a nationally famous fried chicken joint.  There's no seating inside.  You walk up to the counter and order a package of greasy goodness.

A brief review of it on The Splendid Table on NPR.  http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/whereweeat/stern_prices.shtml

THAT SOUNDS PERFECT!  Thanks.  We found a couple of cool places in Austin that were not national chains or fancy restaurants.

There's good Vietnamese to be had near the corner of Tyvola and South, about a mile away from the hotel, at the Saigon Palace.  Here's their Yelp review:  http://www.yelp.com/biz/saigon-palace-charlotte

The Flying Biscuit Cafe serves Southern food and also has good vegetarian options.  It's actually an Atlanta based restaurant, a kind of a regional upscale chain that's recently come to Charlotte.  They're good but a bit pricey for what they offer.  Their site is:  http://www.flyingbiscuit.com/  and the closest one to the hotel would be the Park Road location.  Ironically for a business with that name, the biscuits are probably the least impressive thing on the menu.

I'll also second the suggestion for Lupie's Cafe.  It's quirky and local, but it'd definitely be a drive from the hotel.  http://www.lupiescafe.com/

For barbecue, try Mac's Speed Shop.  It's on South Boulevard and you could walk there from the New Bern Station, plus they're open until midnight.  http://www.macspeedshop.com/

Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop is a local business with good food, not just soda.  When movies shoot locally and they need a picturesque soda counter, they usually pick Pike's.  I think Shallow Hal might have been the last one to use it.  It's a very easy walk from one of the light rail stations (New Bern?).  If you go and you get a drink, I recommend the Black Cow.  Their red velvet cake is also made the old fashioned way, I believe - with vinegar, cocoa, and buttermilk to give the proper red color, no artificial dyes.  http://www.yelp.com/biz/pikes-old-fashioned-soda-shop-charlotte

Reba, if you or anybody need to hit a grocery store or run some quick errands, I'll be happy to drive you.  My name is Heather Hill.  I look like this: http://www.tvini.com/images/misc/Aprilhair.jpg  and I'll be wearing a hospitality armband.
